Ghanaian prospectors mined a record amount of gold

Ghana’s Gold Board (GoldBod) bought between 50 and 54 metric tonnes of gold from artisanal and small-scale miners in the first half of 2026. According to experts, at this pace, output from the segment is on course to match or surpass the record 104 metric tonnes produced in 2025.

In 2025, for the first time in Ghana's history, artisanal and small-scale gold mining overtook large-scale mining. In total, Ghana produced 5.94 million ounces in 2025, up from 4.82 million ounces in 2024. Artisanal and small-scale mining contributed 3.11 million ounces, equal to 52.4% of national production.

Gold remains Ghana's largest export commodity. In 2025, artisanal mining of the precious metal generated almost $11 billion in foreign exchange earnings in 2025, compared with about $9 billion from large enterprises.
