GERD provides not only energy, but also fish
Beyond generating hydroelectric power and serving as a tourist attraction, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has created employment opportunities through fishery development.
According to the Benishangul-Gumuz Region Agriculture Bureau, in the past fiscal year, 10,799 tons of fish were harvested from Lake Nigat, a massive artificial reservoir formed by the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Currently, 46 associations are organized in the region, which are actively engaged in fishing on Lake Nigat. Catch volumes this year have doubled the figures for 2017, and local residents who are engaged in fishing have significantly improved their livelihoods, earning good income.
